Banner Health System was created in September 1999 by the merger of the Lutheran and Samaritan health systems. Today, Banner Health System operates in 14 states, including Alaska, and is one of the largest, nonprofit health care systems in the U.S. with 30 hospitals, 24,500 employees and nearly 4,900 physicians. Banner Health System has two main operating divisions: Banner Health Arizona and Banner Health West. Banner Health Arizona is comprised of the Lutheran and Samaritan locations from throughout Arizona, while Banner Health West comprises the former Lutheran locations in 13 states.
