West Plains had a population of less than 9000, and the closest major hospital was more than 100 miles away by ground transport. The road system in this hilly, remote region of the Ozarks often made it difficult to reach people in a timely manner. At that time, air ambulances typically were based in metropolitan areas. The company founders believed that the people who need air ambulance transport the most are the ones who live far away from a hospital. We have received an overwhelming outpouring of support from ambulance companies from across the U.S. We want to express our appreciation to Dr. Ray Authement of UL who so graciously offered 100 dorm rooms to house the medics that came from as far away as Illinois, West Virginia, Minnesota, South Carolina, Ohio, Georgia, and Texas. Established in 1979, CareFlite is the eighth oldest air medical transportation service in the nation, and the second oldest in Texas. CareFlite began with one helicopter shared between Methodist Dallas Medical Center and Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital transporting about 20 patients each month.
